Malacañang Park, Manila — COLONEL RAMON P ZAGALA MASTER IN NATIONAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION (INFANTRY) PA assumes post as the Presidential Security Group Commander in acting capacity today. He is also appointed as the Acting Senior Military Assistant to the President (SMA). Prior his assignment, he was the AFP Spokesperson, at the same time, Executive Officer of the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Civil Military Operations, OJ7, at the General Headquarters, AFP in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Colonel Zagala is a certified VIP Protector as he is a graduate of VIP Protection Course and held various positions in PSG during his junior years in the service such as Executive Officer from year 1997 to 2000 of 1st Light Armor Company (Separate), now presently called as the 5th Cavalry Company and Aide-de-Camp to former President Joseph Estrada.
He was born on August 6, 1969 in Camp Aquino, Tarlac and took his primary and secondary schooling at La Salle Greenhills in Mandaluyong City. He further earned his Bachelor of Arts Major in Political Science at the De La Salle University in Manila in 1990.
He was commissioned to the AFP Regular Force on August 9, 1994. Prior to entering the military, Colonel Zagala was the Corps Commander of the De La Salle University Naval ROTC unit from 1989 to 1990. He entered the Officer Candidate School in 1993 and became their class First Captain earning him the Chief of Staff Saber.
Colonel Zagala is a seasoned combat officer with 33 encounters against the enemy that spans all levels, from team leader, platoon, company and battalion commander. His career highlights include, as Company Commander of Charlie “Conqueror” Company of 24th Infantry Battalion, 7th Infantry Division, Philippine Army and as Battalion Commander of 28th Infantry (Kamagong) Battalion, 10th Infantry (Agila) Division. Aside from these, he was assigned to different Army and GHQ units covering Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao holding various significant command and staff positions.
Colonel Zagala’s professionalism and competence has been displayed for almost three decades now. He is greatly exposed to Civil Military Operations and gained expertise in Public Affairs as he headed several key positions in different assignments such as Chief, Administrative Branch and Chief, Civil Affairs Branch, Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Civil Military Operations, OU7, NCRCOM, AFP; Assistant Chief of Staff for CMO, G7, Special Forces Regiment, Special Operations Command; Chief of Public Affairs Office and Spokesman, AFP; and Assistant Chief of Staff, G7 of 10th Infantry Division in Mawab, Davao de Oro.
Colonel Zagala also completed various career and specialization courses here and abroad to include Special Forces Operations Course, Basic Airborne Course, UN Peacekeeping Operations, Armor Officer Advance Course, Public Affairs Officer Qualifying Course at Fort Meade, Maryland, USA under the International Military Education and Training Program; Jumpmaster Course, Australian Command and Staff Course, Australian Defense College, and Master of Military and Defense Studies, Australian National University at Canberra, Australia.
He also received numerous awards and decorations both in administrative and combat duties to include the Distinguished Service Star, a Gold Cross Medal for gallantry in combat, Gawad sa Kaunlaran Medal, Bronze Cross Medals and US Public Affairs Badge, and Presidential Medal of Merit.
Colonel Zagala belongs to a family rich in military tradition spanning three generations, from his grandfather, Colonel Ramon Zagala to his father Major General Rafael Zagala, all imbued with the motivation to serve the country and people.
He is happily married to Mrs. Nenita Zagala and blessed with two sons, named Vincent Michael and Joseph Rafael.
